The no-shampoo method of hair care is all the rage right now and for good reason. Getting rid of commercial shampoo sounds like a great idea once you realize what's in those bottles.

This book, written by author Alan Bullington, presents a plan to you for switching to a no-shampoo alternative solid shampoo bars. Once seen as a convenient way to carry shampoo while traveling, these solid shampoo bars are actually an important way to go "no-poo" and still keep your hair and scalp looking and feeling clean and healthy.

Producing these shampoo bars is a lot like making cold process soap with some important differences. Bullington and his family have produced and sold many thousand bars of premium soap and luxury shampoo bars, so this information results from much experience. It's easy, with the instructions in this book, to learn how to use the very best ingredients available to craft your very own line of premium solid shampoo and get rid of the weird chemicals. The time is right to move to a more natural approach to hair care!

With the instructions and already-formulated recipes you get in this book, you can learn to make these types of mild and nourishing shampoos

Lemongrass Bergamot Shampoo Bars
Two Bee Shampoo Bars
Lavender Ylang Avocado Bar
Tall Sunflower Shampoo Bars
Tangerine-Spearmint Luxury Solid Shampoo
Herbal Shampoo Bar

What's more, you can customize these proven blends to make shampoo that is tailored to your own personal preferences. Adding your own unique scents and oils is easy and it's fun!

The tools required to learn this craft are mostly simple kitchen tools that you probably already have right now, with the possible exception of an inexpensive scale. Also, the premium recipes are made up of easily obtained oils combined with other easy-to-order materials. Everything required is simple to get.

What are you waiting for? Gain freedom from mainstream shampoo and begin crafting your own solid shampoo bars!

The book keeps it great. It starts off with what a shampoo bar is, why it is good and what makes it different from regular soap. Then the author goes into all the different possible ingredients and explains which one is good for what and why the ingredients are used. This section is very helpful, when the reader tries to create their own recipes.
My only criticism is that the book only uses cold process to make the soap. I would want to know, why hot process is not used. Is it a bad option for shampoo bars, or did the author just focus on cold process for the ease of the reader?
The recipes provided are good and useful. It is a good selection for beginners to see what is possible and work their way up, and for advanced soap makers to still be challenged.
My favorite part of the book was when the author explained the effects of certain oils on the curing time. The author also has a great take on essential oils and their usage.
This book has no recipes for palm oil.
Overall this book is a keeper.

Handcrafting Artisan Shampoo Bars From Your Kitchen edition by Alan Bullington Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews

This was no-nonsense guide and approach to soap making --in this case, specifically shampoo bars that took the fear factor away. I appreciated the author's descriptions of ingredients and his slant toward natural and sustainable ingredient choices, also talking about making choices in a responsible way (considering how rare or valuable it is and balancing that with the amount to which it will give value to your product). I made my first batch without a hitch and felt so empowered to try more creativity with future batches!
Well organized and very through. The author speaks to the reader in a casual and encouraging voice. I learned a lot and will be soon making the move from m&p to cold press.
Great book. As soon as it was downloaded I read it! I have been making cold process for several years but am now really excited about making shampoo bars! The author did a wonderful job explaining the different oils that work best for these special bars. Thanks so much Allan for sharing your recipes! Can't wait to make these!

Very well written. The author provides recipes, but also gives you enough information to create recipes of your own design. Highly recommended.
This eBook was very helpful and I especially liked the 'Resources and Ideas' section at the end which included some professional level equipment sites. The length was not too long which I appreciated (as sometimes books that are too long can be redundant with more information than is needed). You can tell the author is speaking from solid experience. The tips for using the bars such as to lather first and then gently apply to hair and opting to use the shampoo bar after washing your hair with apple cider vinegar were informative. Also, I liked the tip on how if you add too much of materials like yucca root and black willow bark in a shampoo bar it could cause tangles in hair. I bought a shampoo bar at a farmers market with additives like those and it did cause tangles in my hair. There are definitely tips for experienced soap-makers in this eBook and it provides the needed information to get a novice started.
Great little book! I have already made two half recipes from it - the basic one and the Ylang-Ylang/Lavendar. Love them both. I don't have to use conditioner anymore either - which is a bonus. Too bad I now have to wait until I use up the bars to try some of the others! He has great instructions on making the bars as well as a section that deals with the different oils to use and why to use them. If you are looking to make your own shampoo I would recommend this book. I would also recommend making half batches! Each bar is lasting me about a month of daily use. 2 half batches = and entire year of shampoo!! If a particular bar isn't suited for your hair type...that is a lot of soap to either give away or rebatch!!
For the price, this little book totally meets my needs. I am unable to use commercial shampoos. I made my first batch of bar shampoo at a class wanted a a reference book for the next with other formula options. This book, unlike other soap making books, is only about shampoo bars. On to my next batch with confidence and a reasonable variety of recipes to try.

Then the author goes into all the different possible ingredients and explains which one is good for what and why the ingredients are used.
